Foundation Cats
The introduction of the CFA Breed Standards written many years ago by Jeanne Singer describes the philosophy for art of successful breeding better than any other I have seen.
A successful breeder is an artist working with living creatures as their tools or Foundation Cats to produce cats/kittens approaching the "ideal" for the breed.
Sometimes these cats are cats with extreme features. Sometimes the cats are "middle-of-the-road" cats that are exceptional for their overall balance and harmony as described in the standard.
